JCL Logistics focuses on sustainable transport

JCL Logistics setzt auf nachhaltige Transporte

Baar, Switzerland, 19 July 2021: The owner-operated logistics service provider JCL Logistics is offering its customers additional options for environmentally friendly transports. To further advance its sustainability strategy, the logistics provider’s Road & Rail division is now using a new dual-power locomotive for a regular rail service from Bremen to southern Germany. JCL also relies on green energy in its B2C division, which makes reliable end-customer deliveries for well-known retailers. In June, a testing phase with an electric vehicle for the client IKEA was successfully completed.

In the rail sector, electric operation is significantly more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to diesel operation, but not all lines in Germany are fully electrified yet. For this reason, JCL runs its regular train between Bremen and the destinations Hof and Neumarkt (Oberpfalz) using a new Vectron Dual Mode locomotive. This combines the advantages of a diesel locomotive with those of an electric locomotive. The train uses certified green energy from renewable power sources, and as a result, JCL is 100% CO2-neutral on this route. Based on three round trips per week, the company shifts about 7,500 truck transports per year to rail on this route and thus contributes significantly to reducing the ecological footprint of its customers.

A Citroën e-Jumper was used for a testing phase with an electric vehicle in the greater Cologne area for JCL’s client IKEA. A 4-tonne truck featuring a lifting platform and box body, this vehicle’s payload capacity is 965 kg, and the manufacturer promises a range of approximately 200 km. As a result of the Corona crisis as well as other factors, JCL has been recording a strong increase in online orders in the B2C segment for several months. This is why environmentally friendly transport options continue to gain in importance. For orders in urban delivery areas, the electric vehicle has proven effective for JCL.

New research shows decarbonising supply chains to the greatest extent is possible. The individual steps are often small scale, but the overall effect is significant. To date, JCL has already implemented various measures to reduce harmful emissions. For example, through the use of a new EUR Class 6 vehicle fleet, a company-wide reduction in energy consumption as well as waste separation. The planned use of electric and hybrid vehicles is now another component in implementing the corporate sustainability strategy.

JCL has been certified according to EMAS (The Eco Management and Audit Scheme) since 2020. This standard not only includes all elements of the environmental management system standard ISO 14001, but also goes beyond its requirements. Therefore, successful EMAS certification includes ISO 14001 certification.

Svend Hartog, CEO B2C and Member of the Management Board JCL Logistics, explains: “As a global logistics specialist, JCL is aware of its great responsibility towards the environment and future generations. We are committed to expanding our services in an environmentally responsible manner. By saving harmful emissions, we are once again moving closer to our goal of developing JCL into a fully sustainable logistics company in the future.”
